1. Organise a person to drive you to your dentists or oral surgery practice.

Depending on your dentist or surgeon, different types of sedatives can be used. These include oral sedatives, gas and/or intravenous sedation. Due to the sedative factors, it generally isn’t safe for you to drive home after the procedure. Having a support person with you on the day that can drive you to-and-from your appointment is very helpful.

2. Wisdom teeth pain; you shouldn’t feel any!

Before the procedure the dentist or surgeon will use a topical numbing gel on your gums. This makes the anaesthetic injection a little more comfortable. The dentist or surgeon will then use an anaesthetic injection to numb the area. After this injection is complete there should be no feeling in the area at all!

Most commonly, you will feel pressure, like someone pushing against you. But you will not feel pain.

3. Salt water rinses is your friend

You will be given after-care instructions. It is important to follow these instructions to optimise healing and reduce wisdom teeth recovery time. During the first 24 hours you cannot rinse, however after this period we recommend warm salt water rinses 3-4 times a day for 7-10 days.

4. Pain killers

A prescribed sedative can be taken 30-45 minutes before the procedure. This helps reduce any anxiety. Pain killers are also recommended 30-60 minutes after the procedure. This helps keep pain levels at bay once the anaesthetics has worn off. You may need to continue to take these pain killers as-and-when required, up to 7-10 days.

5. Soft food

After the procedure you will be able to eat, however you will be numb for a couple of hours. It is important to eat soft foods to begin with so you don’t bite your lip whilst numb. Soft food for a few days post-op will also help reduce any trauma to the tooth removal site, ultimately promoting healing. Cold foods will also help decrease swelling and can be a yummy treat!
