Extraction may become necessary for various reasons, including severe tooth decay to prevent further infection and periodontal disease, which can result in tooth loosening.
Additionally, impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth, may require extraction to avoid complications like infection or overcrowding.
In some cases of orthodontic treatment, tooth extraction may be recommended to alleviate overcrowding. If the patient has experienced dental trauma from an accident, tooth extraction may be needed to preserve the teeth and overall dental health.
There are three basic types of tooth extraction methods:
A simple extraction is done when the shape of the tooth and roots are easy to remove. After numbing the area with local anaesthesia, the dentist uses forceps to remove the affected tooth in a single piece, which includes the crown and all of the roots. It’s one of the most common extraction procedures and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
This extraction method is used for teeth with multiple or diverging roots, making it challenging for the tooth to be removed intact due to root shape, direction, or decay. By cutting between the roots with a bur, each root can be individually extracted.
For particularly challenging cases, such as impacted or deeply fractured teeth, a surgical extraction may be necessary. During this procedure, the dentist lifts the gum to access the underlying bone, which is then trimmed to ease tooth removal. At this stage, roots may also be separated if needed.
Once the tooth is extracted, the dentist repositions and stitches the gum with stitches that may dissolve on their own or require removal later. Taking out stitches is very simple, pretty painless and takes only a few seconds to do. Sometimes, stitches may fall out on their own, which is usually nothing to worry about.

At Smile Place Dental our goal is to ensure you feel informed and comfortable every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect during a tooth extraction procedure:
1. Consultation and Assessment: First, your dentist will review your X-rays and examine your mouth. This helps us determine the best approach for your extraction and provide you with a clear estimate of the cost.
2. Discussion of Plan: We’ll explain the recommended procedure in detail, answering any questions you might have and addressing your concerns. Transparency is key to making sure you feel confident and at ease.
3. Procedure Preparation: Before starting, we’ll ensure you are comfortable and that the area is thoroughly numbed. Your comfort is our priority, and we use the latest techniques to minimise any discomfort.
4. Tooth Extraction: As we begin the extraction, we will carefully work to remove the tooth. While we aim for the simplest approach, sometimes the tooth may not come out as easily as expected. If this happens, we may need to switch to a more complex method, such as a sectional or surgical extraction.
5. Adaptable Approach: If complications arise, like the tooth fracturing, we will seamlessly transition to the necessary technique to safely and effectively remove the tooth. Throughout the procedure, we will keep you informed about what is happening and ensure you remain as comfortable as possible.
6. Post-Extraction Care: After the extraction, the dentist will gently clean out the gum socket and stitch up the gum if needed. You’ll be asked to bite down on a piece of gauze to stop bleeding. Painkillers will be provided to ease any discomfort and our dentists will provide you with clear aftercare instructions to promote further healing.
While we’ve answered a few frequently asked questions below, every smile is unique. If you’d like tailored advice or have something specific in mind, we invite you to book a complimentary consultation. We’ll take the time to understand your needs and guide you with care and expertise.
